IMPORTANT MESSAGE: 1 Case of Swine Flu Confirmed at Mather Heights

A message from MATHER HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

MATHER HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Message sent - 8/28/2009
H1N1

Dear Mather Heights Families,

This is your principal Mrs. Hamlin. Please read this important message about the H1N1 virus.

We learned late this afternoon that a member of our student body was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

While there may have been cases reported of the H1N1 virus from within our school community, we are consistently monitoring the condition of our students and taking all necessary steps to ensure student safety and a safe school environment. We are in regular contact with the Sacramento County Health Department, and we will keep you informed about any developments that affect the health of our students and staff. At this time they are not recommending any school closure and if your child is feeling well, they are encouraged to come to school.

We ask that parents monitor their children and report any students with flu-like symptoms to both the principal and your health care provider. Signs and symptoms of influenza include:

• Fever of 100 degrees or higher
• Chills
• Sore throat or trouble swallowing
• Coughing or sneezing
• Body aches, headache
• Fatigue

When we have a report of the flu at a site, we will take all reasonable steps to sanitize the desks and other surfaces that students are likely to touch. Students, staff and parents can best protect themselves by following the advice of health professionals. They have been reminding everyone to:

 Wash their hands frequently and thoroughly
 Cover their mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
 And to stay home if feeling ill

Thank you for listening to this message.

More information about the H1N1 Virus can be found at the district’s website at www.fcusd.org

Got Paper?

Hi Everyone!

Mather Heights will be hosting a Paper Drive September 1-30, 2009 to help our children in this time of budget cuts. We are asking each family to donate a minimum of 2 reams of white photocopy paper.

The reams of paper will be stacked by the cafeteria by grade level so that the children can see their progress.

On October 1st the grade level with the most paper will be announced. The grade level that wins will receive an additional recess and snowcone party.

Thank you to everyone for all of your help!

Just a reminder that the Fall Festival planning meeting is tonight (June 25) at 6:30PM in the staff lounge. We encourage all Room Parents to come as we will be choosing booths and silent auction baskets for each class. Anyone else that has new ideas or would like to help out in anyway are also welcome to come. Remember, the FF can not be successful without help from parents! :) If you are a Room Parent please reply back so that we can add you to the Room Parent distribution list. We are also looking for volunteer(s) for Room Parents for Harlin's and Cain's class. If your child is in any of these classes and you would like to help out please let us know.

Our PTA membership is still going strong! Almost 100 members have joined!!! Membership is only $7 per person and the classroom with the most members will help earn a $25 gift certificate for their teacher to help out with supplies for their classroom. If you can't be actively involved a paid membership shows that you support PTA and all the we do for the school. We also have open positions on the PTA. If you want to be involved with the board, the following positions are still open: Historian and Room Parent Coordinator. If you are interested in any of these positions or would like more information, please talk to PTA President Gena Pascual.

Lastly, the Sally Foster/Otis fundraiser ends this Wednesday the 26th. Please remember to send your child's orders back to school.

The Most Successful Recycling Day Ever (or at least so far)!

Thank you so much to all the families that stored their recycling over the summer and brought it to school today! This has been the best recycling fundraiser yet. I almost could not close the back of the truck! I was worried some bags were going to have to ride in the cab with me and the kids. I did not see the final pile of Box Tops but I was impressed with the amount I saw before school started. Keep up the great work! -Amy C. Recycling Coordinator
